preparing for your family photos
what to wear:
(think of these things as "helpful hints", not a list of demands. these are meant to be helpful! if there is anything in this list that you disagree with or you know will make it more difficult for you, then by all means - do it the way you think is best!)
i know it's a bit tricky to balance all these things out, but again - they're just a guideline! Do your best and know that we're going to have a great photoshoot! feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions!

- Choose coordinating, not matching. when choosing your family outfits you want to think in terms of coordinating colors and patterns, not necessarily matching. this with give the photograph some interest and contrast while also allowing you and your family the flexibility for each one to wear their own style and comfort level without being "forced" into a style they're not necessarily happy with by having to wear a matching outfit with the rest of the family.
- Consider your home decor. if you You’ll want to print these and hang them in your home, you'll want to consider your home decor style when picking out what to wear in family photos. Since a few of these photos will most likely be hanging in your home and on display for a long time, make sure that the clothing you select blends in with the color scheme of your home. this is the same reason you want to consider clothing that is appropriate year round. (a Christmas themed photoshoot may seem like great idea in December, but come January, those Christmas themed elf hats start to feel a little out of place displayed on your wall)
- Limit neon colors, distracting patterns and large logos. Including articles of clothing with multiple patterns or large logos can become a distraction. Strong colors, prints and abstract patterns can overpower your photo, and draw the eye to it, rather than to the faces of the family. when you look at your photo you want to immediately be drawn into a FEELIng, not a distracting image of a logo or neon color.
- be comfortable, confident & you!
- be comfortable! it is said that how photogenic a person is is not a reflection of looks or beauty, but how comfortable they are in front of the camera. if a person is uncomfortable it will certainly come out in their faces! in addition - dress to MOVe! in our shoot, we will be sitting, standing, twirling, and maybe even giving piggy back rides, even tossing babies :) - so, do your best to consider how you can dress to look nice, while also maintaining comfort and being able to move!
- be confident! this goes hand in hand with #3 - if you are not confident, you will not be comfortable, it will show on your face! i know it's a bit of a balance trying to be comfortable and also look your best - but do what you can to dress in something that you feel like you look good in. the more confident that you feel, the more comfortable you'll be in front of the camera. and yes, i do Photoshop out pimples, excessive flyaway hairs, and other blemishes - so you can be confident that i am looking out for you and looking to capture the best version of beautiful you!
- be you! (let your personality shine) maybe you have one kid that has one pair of shoes that they have painted on and it's a form of expression for them? maybe you have one child who insists on wearing her disney princess dresses even to the gas station? maybe your husband is known for his bolo ties? whatever the case may be - that is your family with all their wonderful styles and quirks, and i want you to look at your photos and have the real & wonderful you, (not just some perfect, fake version of you) be represented in them!
